Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" released
Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" released
Today it finally hit the streets, and i have to say, it's looking very good. I have running it already on Vmware and it is doing very well, much more stable than Intrepid with its buggy new X Server. The only thing i dislike is the wallpaper, it's looking like they forgot to choose a new artistic masterpiece from the community, i hope a new one will follow.
Here's a small overview of the overall changes, as usual Ubuntu relies on steady improvements instead of huge innovations:
* Linux Christmas Kernel 2.6.28, the new ext4 filesystem is usable, but due to the delayed allocation bug ext3 stays the default
* The new X Server 1.6 (requires fglrx 9.4!) and a more bug free Xorg 7.4
* 30% faster booting than Intrepid
* New "Notifications, indicators and alerts" system
* Gnome 2.26.1 (Kubuntu uses KDE 4.2.2)
o Brasero 2.26.0 is now the default disc burning app of Nautilus
o Improved display properties app with better handling of multiple screens
* OpenOffice 3.0
* Old standard themes like Crux and Glossy have been replaced with new community themes like Dust and New Wave
* The Server Edition contains the open source Eucalyptus cloud computing software matching the Amazon EC2 API
Official Release Notes & Known Issues
The early release is unusual, the releases normally come out in the late evening, get it before download rush kills the servers! Don't underestimate the millions of users who want to upgrade or (re)install the newest version all at once, if the net seems to be slow today it's because all these people are sucking the hell out of the intercontinental data highways!
Due to this fact i recommend the use of the torrents!
If you never used Linux before, try it out on Vmware, or virtual box.
Virtual Box is OpenSource. You can check out a tutorial at LifeHacker
You can also use Wubi to to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way.
